0 IRMS NJ Proudly Supports 5under40
Was at a very powerful event last night with the 5underforty foundation. Founded by breast cancer survivor Jennifer Finkelstein, 5 Under 40 Foundation Corporation provides funding for medical, psychological, beauty and wellness services for women under 40 in NYC and NJ who have been diagnosed with breast cancer or have tested positive for a BRCA gene mutation.
Their mission is to address the whole being in order to empower, foster hope and improve the quality of life for women in the face of this disease.
Meeting these amazing women was humbling and reminded me of how much women have the ability to inform and empower other women. Some key take away points worth sharing:
- Know and listen to your own body. If you find something just isn’t right-you find a lump, have breast discharge, pain under the arm disregard your age and speak to your doctor.
- Don’t take “NO” for an answer if you’re told you’re too young for a mammogram or breast ultrasound. Be your own Advocate and force the issue.
- Realize if you’re being told a particular test is not covered by your insurance carrier you have options to argue that decision. You may request a “peer to peer” review of your case with your physician and a medical professional from your insurance carriers office. Often these discussions result in you getting coverage.
Connect with a group like 5Under40.org for support, friendship and resources. Connecting with someone else who has walked this path before can make a huge difference in your mental health and perhaps even your physical health.
