PCOS… or not?
PCOS is a condition involving irregular periods, elevated levels of male hormones (hyperandrogenism) that can cause male pattern hair growth, and ultrasound findings of polycystic ovaries. PCOS is very common, affecting 5-10% of all women. Occasionally, the symptoms of PCOS can actually be caused by another underlying condition that is indistinguishable from PCOS without an appropriate workup. Here at IRMS, we will perform appropriate testing to ensure that other conditions, such as non-classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia, are not present and confirm the diagnosis of PCOS.
PCOS is a manageable condition that carries a favorable outcome in regards to fertility, but also carries an increased risk of developing metabolic abnormalities such as diabetes and the metabolic syndrome. Because of these risks, we will also perform a complete metabolic evaluation to help you optimize your overall health. If you think you have PCOS, or have been diagnosed with PCOS previously, talk with your doctor or visit one of our knowledgeable physicians at IRMS to make sure you have had the proper testing, counselling and treatment for a healthy conception, pregnancy, and lifetime to follow.
