Another option that is now often considered is known as Reciprocal IVF – one partner chooses to donate the eggs and the other partner carries the pregnancy. In order to accomplish this, in vitro fertilization (IVF) is necessary.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the process by which an egg is fertilized by sperm outside the body. An IVF cycleincludes ovarian stimulation, retrieval of eggs and the transfer of embryo(s) back to the uterus, in this case the partner who is going to carry the pregnancy. At IRMS we use medication to suppress a woman’s natural hormone production and then introduce FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) back into her system at a higher dose than she would normally produce in order to develop multiple follicles and ultimately multiple mature eggs for retrieval. At retrieval, the eggs are taken by our embryologist and placed in a special culture medium that encourages fertilization and the growth of high-quality embryos.
